Troubleshooting common difficulties: Grip and presentation

Thursday 27th January 2022 at 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

How is our whole body involved in handwriting, including pencil grip and posture? How can muscle control, such as stabilisation of the wrist, affect writing fluency and efficiency? Why is visual perception and visual-motor integration important for handwriting?

Presented by Paediatric OT and former NHA Vice-Chair, Catherine Elsey, this webinar will provide a basic introduction to the functional skills required for handwriting. Structured around four themes (fine motor skills; ergonomics and posture; visual-motor integration; and visual perception), it is open to all, including teachers, parents, and occupational therapists.

Although predominantly focused on handwriting acquisition in the pre-school and primary school age groups, the information provided can be used to address many common handwriting difficulties regardless of age group.

About the presenter: Catherine Elsey (DipCOT, PG Cert Sensory Integration, HCPC Registered) has over 26 years of specialist experience as a Paediatric OT. This has involved the assessment and treatment of children with specific learning difficulties, difficulties with sensory integration and sensory attachment, handwriting, co-ordination and perception. Catherine is currently providing an occupational therapy service at Cherrycroft, an independent specialist psychology service specialising in developmental trauma.  She has previously delivered lectures to occupational therapists, teachers, psychologists and parents, in the UK and abroad, on practical solutions to handwriting and co-ordination difficulties.

Cost is £15 for members, £20 for non-members.
