NHA Twilight Webinar: Phasing Out the Entry Stroke

Monday 11th July 2022 at 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

National Handwriting Association webinar“At first children should not be taught to join letters or to start every letter ‘on the line’ with a ‘lead-in’, because these practices cause unnecessary difficulty for beginners.”

DfE, October 2021

Presented by Sue Smits, Specialist Handwriting Consultant and Advisor, this webinar aims to expose the truth about the entry/lead-in stroke. It will address questions such as:

  • What is meant by the terms, ‘entry/lead-in stroke’, ‘cursive’, ‘pre-cursive’ and ‘continuous cursive’?
  • What is the rationale behind teaching the entry/lead-in stroke?
  • What difficulties are faced by children with SEN, and by left-handers, due to writing in an overly cursive script?
  • What new curriculum changes regarding the entry/lead-in stroke have been introduced?
  • Why have these changes been brought in?
  • How does this affect primary and secondary schools?
  • What needs to change?

Target audience

Suitable for all, but especially teachers, tutors, parents, carers, occupational therapists, and policy makers.
