NHA Twilight: Handwriting Difficulties and Transitions (EYFS to KS3)

Virtual Event

Monday 18th May 2026 at 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

How do we ensure a student’s voice on the page remains strong as they move through the milestones of their education?

Transitions, from the explorative, play-based beginnings of EYFS to the higher-stakes academic demands of KS3, are critical moments for a young writer. When handwriting is not yet automatic, the physical struggle of transcription can often mask a pupil’s true ability to compose and share their unique perspective with the world.

Join us for an insightful Twilight session as we bridge the gap between clinical research and classroom reality. This webinar brings together a multi-disciplinary perspective to explore how we can support functional fluency across every key stage.

What we will explore:

  • The Transition “Dip”: Identifying why handwriting difficulties often surface or accelerate during the move between key stages.
  • The Science of Automaticity: How Occupational Therapy views motor plans and physical barriers to writing.
  • The Inclusive Classroom: Practical, SENCo-led strategies for supporting students with handwriting challenges in a busy school environment.
  • Empowering the Individual: Moving beyond ‘neatness’ to ensure handwriting serves as a tool for self-expression, from early letter formation to secondary school exams.

Expert speakers:

  • Dr. Melissa Prunty (Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy, University of Limerick): Bringing a deep understanding of the research and physical mechanics behind handwriting development.
  • Johanna Morris (Experienced SENCo and Head of Inclusion): Providing the “on-the-ground” expertise of how to implement effective support and inclusion strategies within the school framework.

Whether you are an educator, therapist, or inclusion lead, this session will provide you with the tools to ensure that every student’s handwriting empowers their academic journey.
