Supporting handwriting readiness: teacher learning, classroom support and current research
How can we better support teachers in meeting the needs of children with delays in handwriting readiness? Paediatric occupational therapist and doctoral researcher Stella Parkinson will share findings from her earlier research exploring early career teachers’ knowledge, confidence and training needs regarding handwriting readiness. She will then introduce her current NIHR-funded PhD at Oxford Brookes University, including findings from a realist review examining how and why school-based handwriting support may work. The talk will outline plans to co-design a teacher workshop and screening tool and explore what the research could mean for everyday classroom practice. There will be time for questions at the end.
Stella is a Pediatric Occupational Therapist and NIHR Doctoral Clinical Academic Fellow.
