SUMMARY:2026 Handwriting Symposium: Handwriting Matters: Teaching\, Support & Inclusion from Early Years to Secondary
DESCRIPTION:The National Handwriting Association is pleased to host the 2026 Handwriting Symposium at Liverpool John Moores University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nDr Tim Mills MBE\n\n\n\nLead Author of The Department of Education’s Writing Framework \n\n\n\nThis session will aim to bust the myths about The Writing Framework and offer clarity on on the implementation of the framework in schools.  \n\n\n\nProfessor Anna Barnett\n\n\n\nAuthor of MABC‑3 and DASH‑2 \n\n\n\nProfessor Barnett will introduce the updated Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting (DASH‑2) and explain how it can be used across different levels of assessment in both school and clinical settings.  \n\n\n\nProfessor Jill Zwicker\n\n\n\nProfessor of Occupational Therapy\, developmental neuroscientist\, and author of Write Like A Pro! \n\n\n\nProfessor Zwicker will share evidence on interventions that support motor learning in children\, with a particular focus on handwriting. She will present findings from her research and provide an overview of her Write Like A Pro! targeted programme for handwriting. \n\n\n\nSarah Reay\n\n\n\nClass teacher\, specialist assessor\, SENCO\, Senior Lecturer\, and Head of Professional Services at PATTOSS Dyslexia Charity \n\n\n\nThis session will focus on accommodations for writing during periods of transition.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe symposium also provides opportunities to hear about research on handwriting versus typing in adolescents with handwriting difficulties\, as well as chances to ‘bring a problem’ and get advice on it. DESCRIPTION:Join Caroline McHugh\, Occupational Therapist and Vice Chair of the National Handwriting Association\, for an engaging and practical twilight session designed to support educators\, parents and caregivers in unlocking children’s potential as writers. \n\n\n\nThis session will explore what it means to be a reluctant writer and why some children find writing difficult. Caroline will help you recognise the key signs of reluctance\, understand the underlying factors (including sensory\, emotional and cognitive influences)\, and reframe writing difficulties with empathy and insight. \n\n\n\nParticipants will leave with a range of practical\, evidence-informed strategies to motivate and support children who struggle with handwriting.
