SUMMARY:NHA Twilight: The use of cursive and its meaning
DESCRIPTION:Our first Twilight webinar of the new year will be presented by Sue Smith of Morrells Handwriting and the NHA’s deputy chair\, Michelle Stone. \n\n\n\nAbout the topic:What does the word cursive mean\, and why did the government phase out the pre-cursive and continuous cursive script with an entry/lead-in stroke? This informative session will examine the importance of pre-writing skills and letter formation and why cursive/joined-up handwriting should be delayed as long as possible. We will also be explaining the NHA’s S-Factors and the teaching steps for legible\, fluent handwriting\, and we will look at a good example of a handwriting policy. \n\n\n\nAbout the presenters:Sue has worked across early years\, primary and secondary schools for over 19 years\, helping educators in school settings to teach children the correct pencil grasp\, letter recognition and joined-up handwriting techniques whilst supporting human development for pre-writing skills. Sue regularly delivers INSET and Twilight handwriting training in schools for all teaching staff. Feedback from the teaching staff often describes her training as a game changer and mind blowing! Her campaign to ditch the cursive with the entry/lead-in stroke resulted in new legislation and the development of a Writing Framework. \n\n\n\nMichelle is a specialist teacher in the East Riding of Yorkshire for children with physical difficulties\, working with mainstream pupils who have physical needs/disabilities\, which includes supporting them to record their work in school. Michelle has a varied experience of working with children with SEND in mainstream settings. Her background before specialising in physical support was as an early years teacher in Hull and London\, then becoming a Senior Teacher for a large inner city primary school in Leeds\, before relocating to East Yorkshire. Michelle led early years PE across Barnet whilst working in London and continued to be PE Lead when teaching in Leeds.  \n\n\n\nPrice: £20 non-members\, £15 members \n\n\n\nMEMBERS: PLEASE LOG IN TO GET YOUR DISCOUNT AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED

SUMMARY:NHA Twilight: Teaching the Left-hander
DESCRIPTION:Why do people think left-handers always have messy writing?\n\n\n\nWhy do people think teaching left-handers is difficult?\n\n\n\nHow is the left-hander’s body involved in handwriting\, including pencil grip and posture? \n\n\n\nHow can the writing implement and paper position affect writing fluency and efficiency? \n\n\n\nWhat alternative letter forms should be considered to help the left-hander establish greater legibility at speed?\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresented by Specialist Teacher and former NHA Chair (2021–22)\, Amanda McLeod\, this webinar will provide you with the knowledge needed to help the left-hander in class or at home. The webinar will be practical so get ready to participate with pen\, paper\, samples of writing and questions! It is open to all\, including teachers\, parents\, and occupational therapists. \n\n\n\nAlthough predominantly focused on handwriting acquisition in the primary school age groups\, the information provided can be used to address many common handwriting difficulties regardless of age group. \n\n\n\nAbout the presenter: Amanda McLeod is the author and series consultant to the publisher Scholastic for its Handwriting series from Nursery to Reception. In her Reception to Year 2 book and the following Years 3-6\, the left-handed writer is considered alongside the right-hander. Amanda is an ex-EYFS teacher\, Dyslexia Specialist and founder of the McLeod Centre for Learning. \n\n\n\nPrice: £20 non-members\, £15 members \n\n\n\nMEMBERS: PLEASE LOG IN TO GET YOUR DISCOUNT AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED

SUMMARY:NHA Twilight Webinar: Phasing Out the Entry Stroke

It will address questions such as: \n\nWhat is meant by the terms\, ‘entry/lead-in stroke’\, ‘cursive’\, ‘pre-cursive’ and ‘continuous cursive’?\nWhat is the rationale behind teaching the entry/lead-in stroke?\nWhat difficulties are faced by children with SEN\, and by left-handers\, due to writing in an overly cursive script?\nWhat new curriculum changes regarding the entry/lead-in stroke have been introduced?\nWhy have these changes been brought in?\nHow does this affect primary and secondary schools?\nWhat needs to change?\n\nTarget audience \nSuitable for all\, but especially teachers\, tutors\, parents\, carers\, occupational therapists\, and policy makers. \nAbout Sue Smits \nSue works as a handwriting consultant\, teaching handwriting to tens of thousands of children a year and is the visiting lecturer to Worcester University and the University of East London. SUMMARY:Troubleshooting common difficulties: Grip and presentation
DESCRIPTION:How is our whole body involved in handwriting\, including pencil grip and posture? How can muscle control\, such as stabilisation of the wrist\, affect writing fluency and efficiency? Why is visual perception and visual-motor integration important for handwriting? \nPresented by Paediatric OT and former NHA Vice-Chair\, Catherine Elsey\, this webinar will provide a basic introduction to the functional skills required for handwriting. This has involved the assessment and treatment of children with specific learning difficulties\, difficulties with sensory integration and sensory attachment\, handwriting\, co-ordination and perception.
