Session 1: Supporting Handwriting in Schools

Melanie Burrough and Dr Debbie Kramer-Roy will present a tiered model for supporting handwriting in schools which encourages collaborative working between educators and Occupational Therapists. They will discuss whole school approaches, targeted interventions and specialist input for children with handwriting difficulties.

Melanie Burrough is Head of Therapy at The Children’s Trust School. She has an MSc in professional development in occupational therapy. Areas of research interest include leadership, innovation, economic evaluation and childhood participation. Melanie has conducted a research study using action research methodology to introduce participation-focussed interventions to clinical practice. Clinically, she has particular interests in evidenced-based service-delivery models, capacity building interventions and outcome measurement for children and young people with neurodisabilities. Melanie is the co-founder and Chair of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section for Children, Young People and Families’ Clinical Forum on School-Based Occupational Therapy.

Dr Debbie Kramer-Roy is a Paediatric Occupational Therapist with many years of clinical experience working with children with handwriting difficulties and teaching both OTs and teachers how to support these children in their practice. Debbie has worked as a Lecturer in Occupational Therapy in the UK and in Inclusive Education at a Teacher Education Institute in Pakistan. Debbie is the co-founder of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section for Children, Young People and Families’ Clinical Forum on School-Based Occupational Therapy. She currently works as an Advanced Paediatric Occupational Therapist in Ealing, and as the Director of Education of the European Master of Science in Occupational Therapy at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

 Session 2: ‘Bring & Share’

Facilitated discussion sessions where members share examples of their practice from their schools & clinics. These sessions will use the model from Session 1 as a framework for discussion. Members should expect to pick up ideas for implementing policies and interventions across the whole school, in smaller groups and on an individual 1:1 basis.

Session 3: What Members need from the NHA in the Digital Age

We will use technology to capture the views of our members on the role of the NHA in the digital age. We would like to find out what members need and want to know so we can tailor our provision of support and resources moving forward.
